giocherà in finale ai China Open contro Tien

Battuto De Minaur, Sinner vola in finale a Pechino.

Gen V Season 2 Just Confirmed That Cate Is Far Stronger Than She Looks

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Gen V season 2, episode 4, “Bags”.

Powerful supes have become commonplace in Gen V, given that Godolkin University is filled with talented young heroes, but one important character is a lot stronger than season 2 is letting on. With characters like Marie being presented as the most promising supe Godolkin has ever seen, the spinoff is clearly putting a lot of emphasis on her skill set.

Not only has she begun to master bloodbending, but her links to Project Odessa in Gen V all but confirm that she is the closest match to Homelander in The Boys universe. However, she isn’t the only supe to be given a spotlight during the show’s return, as Jordan became the number one-ranked student while Emma’s abilities also improved.

Even Cipher’s power reveal in Gen V season 2, episode 4, further emphasized just how many frighteningly strong characters are lurking in the university setting, yet one of the spinoff’s most influential figures is being downplayed. Having shown her capabilities in season 1, Cate has been sidelined and weakened in the latest installment, but she’s still far more intimidating than she looks.

Gen V Season 2 Is Making Cate Look Surprisingly Weak

Cate (Maddie Phillips) dressed in all black and wearing a beanie and looking ahead in Gen V season 2

Following her head injury in season 2’s premiere, Cate’s powers have been messy to say the least, as her ability to control minds doesn’t work as intended. Previously, she was able to touch someone and command them to do whatever she wanted, hence how she was able to keep the Woods a secret and convince Luke that his brother was dead.

Now though, her powers appear to be malfunctioning following her near-death experience. Although she’s still got a long way to go, Cate’s redemption arc in Gen V season 2 has gotten underway, as she helped Jordan sneak into Cipher’s secret room. To do so, she attempted to control a guard’s mind so that they could be let inside without trouble.

Unfortunately, her broken abilities made the target start making love to a garden gnome instead, proving she is much weaker than before. Consequently, the fact that her skills are faulty and that she can rarely use them makes her one of the most fragile central characters on paper, especially since she doesn’t have superstrength or enhanced durability to protect her.

Cate’s Hospital Scene Proves Just How Powerful She Really Is

Cate (Maddie Phillips) looking scared in hospital after waking up in Gen V season 2

With Gen V presenting Cate as more vulnerable than ever, it’s easy to feel she is becoming helpless, but don’t be fooled, as the evidence suggests she is still extremely powerful. Considering she was valuable enough to be part of Homelander’s supe army in The Boys season 4, Cate is clearly one of the franchise’s strongest supes at her peak.

Interestingly though, her powers aren’t completely gone, and her hospital scene showed that they are even more terrifying than first meets the eye. While in a coma, Cate was able to control one of the nurses tending to her to communicate with Sam, eventually making her stab and kill her colleague, alongside at least one other member of the medical staff.

Gen V: Season 2 – What Are Cipher’s Actual Powers?

This article contains spoilers for Gen V Season 2 through Episode 4, “Bags.”

One of the biggest mysteries of Gen V Season 2 on Prime Video isn’t a thing, it’s a person. Who is Cipher, the new Dean of Godolkin University, played by Hamish Linklater? Heck, “mystery” is almost literally his name, as a cipher is defined as “a message in code.” As of the season’s fourth episode, we have some answers, at least in terms of one aspect of that particular mystery: Cipher’s powers. But there’s more to come, so let’s get into it.

In the episode, while Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) and Jordan Li (London Thor/Derek Luh) are forced into a mixed martial arts-style cage match, the rest of the gang – now reunited with previous “villain” Cate Dunlap (Maddie Phillips) – investigates Cipher in order to shut the fight down. One key ingredient to the plan? Marie, who has blood-based powers, is able to tell that Cipher doesn’t have any Compound V in his system. That means, according to our scrappy Guardians of Godolkin, that he is not a Supe, so what is a regular ol’ human doing running a Supe supremacist school like God U?

Complicating plans a bit is that they volunteer Cate to use her “push” powers to force Cipher to confess his humanity. The only problem with that is that Cate’s powers are messed up since Marie, Jordan, and Emma (Lizze Broadway) cracked her head open in the season premiere. So without actually being able to do what she’s being asked to do, Cate is sent to push Cipher into confessing he has no powers on a camera that Emma sneaks in via her shrinking powers through the toilet in a private suite over the “Hostility at the University” fight night between Marie and Jordan. Follow all that?

With this particular comedy of errors already flawed at the start, things only get worse once Cipher reveals he knows every aspect of their plan and seems completely tickled by the gang’s fumbling in the dark.

“Okay, you figured it out,” Cipher says. “I’m human. And I bet you’re wondering how I got away with it for so long.”

He then reveals he knows about the camera and that Cate can’t use her push powers properly, and when Cate blurts out that there’s no V in his blood, he figures out that Marie provided that info as well.

“Here, watch this,” Cipher says, and that’s when we get the big reveal.

Dean Cipher of Godolkin University, as played by Hamish Linklater

What Are Cipher’s Powers On Gen V? Meat Puppet Powers, Baby!

While Cate watches, and Marie tries to shut down the fight by kissing Jordan, Cipher essentially takes over Jordan’s body. Cipher makes them wave to the Dean’s box, talks through Jordan’s mouth, and generally controls Jordan “like a meat puppet, with no strings.”

While Jordan beats the crap out of her, Cipher is clearly using the opportunity to coach Marie. He pushes her until Marie uses her blood powers to make Jordan float in the air, but a side effect is that Marie manages to push Cipher’s control out of Jordan’s body as well, something he seems surprised about.

Marie also almost makes Jordan pop like the little blood bag they are; that’s Marie though. Let’s talk about Cipher.

To put it more plainly, he can puppet people and maybe animals as well (alhough TBD on that last point). That’s pretty non-specific, and clearly more needs to be explored here, but it seems entirely possible based on a careful study of the source material (meaning: watching every episode of Gen V) that his powers are blood-based just like Marie’s. The reasoning there is that in the first season, we discovered that Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) wasn’t a mere “head popper” as seen on The Boys, but she had powers based in blood manipulation, giving her a bonding point with Marie.

If Cipher also has blood-based powers, that would go a long way to explaining a lot of his general interest in Marie, as well as how he coaches her in this very episode. The title “Bags” takes its name from a sequence where Cipher lays a few blood bags on a table and asks Marie to move them from one table to another. After a false start, she does move them, so they upgrade the exercise to a goat named Elon Musk, with Cipher explaining that living beings aren’t much different than thin plastic bags holding blood. “What if I kill Elon?” Marie asks, with Cipher answering, “That’s why we named them for assholes.” While it’s more complicated than merely making Jordan (or Elon Musk the goat) float in the air, that sure seems to be what Cipher is able to do as well – manipulate a human body to do whatever he wants, including speaking the words he wants it to speak.

Is this, perhaps, the ultimate evolution of Marie’s powers? Is this what Cipher has been coaching her towards all along? There’s a fair amount of paternality in the relationship, and we’ve already seen that – as Dr. Gold – Cipher wasn’t just in the Elmira prison that held Marie and friends between seasons of Gen V, but was also there at Project Odessa, which helped create her. Maybe Cipher looks at Marie as his heir, or – while he’s referred to as “Yoda” in this episode – perhaps a more accurate comparison point is Darth Vader. After all, thanks to genetically creating her through Project Odessa, Cipher is one step away from telling Marie, “No, I am your father.”

There’s one itty-bitty little complication here, though…

What About The Lack Of Compound V In Cipher’s Blood?

The fact of the matter is that Marie still didn’t detect any Compound V in Cipher’s blood, which throws a big wrench into this whole power reveal. Everything in the world of The Boys and Gen V is based on Compound V being the source of superpowers – not getting bitten by a radioactive spider, coming to Earth from an alien planet, or any other comic book-style origin.

To suddenly introduce naturally occurring superpowers halfway through a spinoff would be a weird swerve.

There are variations on Compound V, including V24 (also known as Temp V), but there haven’t been any naturally occurring powers in the franchise as of yet. Maybe Cipher is the first, but that isn’t particularly likely, mainly because we’re heading towards the final season of The Boys; to suddenly introduce naturally occurring superpowers halfway through a spinoff would be a weird swerve that would change the game in unpredictable ways.

We’ve got a big clue, though, in that despite being enigmatic – once again, it’s right in the name – Cipher hasn’t lied about anything all season long as far as we know. Take a look again at the quote above, in which he tells Cate that he’s human; he doesn’t deny it, or say Cate doesn’t know what she’s talking about.

To crib a line from I Think You Should Leave: Oh my god, he admit it! What that admission means is a good question. Let’s say Cipher is once again telling the truth, and he is human. How does he also have powers? There’s a big clue to this mystery, but for that we need to talk about another mystery in this episode.

What About Cipher’s “Dad,” aka The Burnt Man In The Hyperbaric Chamber?

Previously, we were teased about a strange locked room in Cipher’s house. Thanks to intrepid investigators Cate and Jordan, we found out what was behind Door #1: Cipher’s father, horribly burnt, in a hyperbaric chamber…or at least, we’re told that’s Cipher’s father.

Putting together some pieces that Jordan and Cate do not have, back at the beginning of the season premiere, we met Thomas Godolkin, played by Wicked star Ethan Slater. Godolkin was working on Project Odessa, which seemed to be developing some unstable serum – possibly a variant of Compound V – which didn’t work. It killed most of the scientists who used it in horrible ways, and the last we saw of Tommy, he was being burned to death in an out-of-control lab fire.

It’s not too much of a stretch to think the horribly burned man we see in Episode 4 is, indeed, Thomas Godolkin, as opposed to an entirely different, unrelated horribly burned man. How he survived, if that is him, is an open-ended question, but Godolkin being Cipher’s father would certainly explain how Cipher came to be Dean of the school. It would also explain why Cipher immediately brought back Thomas Godolkin Day in the previous episode.

And…it also might perhaps explain how Marie can’t detect the V in Cipher’s blood. Perhaps whatever Project Odessa was developing was not exactly Compound V, but something else. If Cipher gets his powers from that, it might not be detectable by Marie, at least not in the same way.

There’s another possibility, though, which is strongly suggested by the whole “meat puppet” thing, but we don’t want to get too ahead of our skis on that one.

As of the end of Episode 4, Cipher’s powers are physical and mind manipulation, essentially marionetting other living beings. As to the other parts of the mystery? Well, that’s one cipher we’ll be unraveling over the rest of Season 2.

Megan Moroney’s New Album Could Be Coming Soon, According to Fan Theory

With singles like “You Had To Be There” and “Six Months Later” making waves among country music lovers as we speak, fans are anxiously awaiting the announcement of “emo cowgirl” Megan Moroney’s third studio album.

From speculating its color scheme to its collaborations and beyond, it’s safe to say everyone is on the edge of their seats!

For those who need a refresher, Moroney’s debut EP, Pistol Made of Roses, dropped in July of 2022, followed by her debut studio album, Lucky, in May of 2023. More recently, the Georgia native dropped her second studio album, Am I Okay?, in July of 2024, followed by its deluxe version later that year.

Dropping a project annually (besides 2025), fans are confident that her highly-anticipated third studio album will be arriving before the end of the year…

Taylor Swift — one of Moroney’s biggest musical inspirations — is known for dropping Easter eggs ahead of album announcements, and based on some social media sleuthing, it looks like Moroney may be following in her footsteps.

Teasing that she will announce her third studio album on October 9, keep scrolling for all the signs that point to this date.

On social media, Moroney has been caught using the number nine time and time again, leading to speculation that she will announce her third studio album on October 9. Examples of this are using exactly nine emojis in the caption, exactly nine photos in the carousel and more, but some are far more obvious than others.

In her August 11 Instagram post — toasting to the end of her summer shows — she typed out a heart using nine threes in the caption: “summer camp ended last night in IL! thank y’all for coming out & seeing us💘 my amazinggg band, touring crew & I get a month off the road but we’re looking forward to seeing yall again in september 🫶🏼💘 these shows have been totally unforgettable THANK YOU<333333333”

She doubled down in her September 21 Instagram post — sharing some highlights from the week, including a recent San Francisco 49ers game — with one of the images featuring a 49ers jersey, with “Moroney” and the number nine emblazoned on the back.

Last but certainly not least, she started teasing the number nine via her TikTok profile as well, sharing a post just days ago captioned “9 pics for 9 more shows 🥹 best time of my life.”

Topping things off, October 9th is the “Tennessee Orange” singer’s birthday and the day before the she begins the final weekend of shows of her Am I Okay? Tour. What better time to begin a brand new era?

Fans clocked this in the comment section of the TikTok video, with one fan writing, “GUYS HEAR ME OUT. MEG POSTED A 10 ON HER INSTA STORY AND A 9. 10/9 IS HER BIRTHDAY SO SHE MIGHT ANNOUNCE AN ALBUM”

Is this theory true, though? Needless to say, we will be keeping up with the talented singer/songwriter on Instagram and TikTok for any further updates.

LeBron James sidelined for start of Lakers training camp with ‘nerve irritation in the glute’

LeBron James won’t be available for the start of Lakers training camp.

Head coach JJ Redick announced Tuesday that James is dealing with “nerve irritation in the glute” and will have a slow ramp-up to the regular season.

“Nerve irritation in the glute” doesn’t come with a boilerplate prognosis. From Redick’s explanation, it doesn’t sound like a significant concern. But for a 40-year-old, 23rd-year NBA veteran with more mileage on his body than most anyone in the history of professional sports, any ailment comes with concern.

Hence, the slower ramp-up for James in training camp.

[Yahoo Sports TV is here! Watch live shows and highlights 24/7]

“It’s probably a little bit longer of a ramp-up leading up to opening night for him,” Redick told reporters at practice on Tuesday. “In year 23, uncharted territory here.”

Redick then acknowledged that the Lakers might not have optimally managed James’ reps last preseason.

“I felt in talking with performance and talking with [trainer Mike Mancias] and LeBron, he probably did too much last year in camp. Which was great for me as a first-year head coach to get buy-in from him.

“But it will be a slower process with him leading into the first game. He’s obviously got 22 years so far of wear and tear on his body. He’s dealing with a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute. We’re playing the long game with LeBron.”

James had a relatively healthy regular season in 2024-25 while playing in 70 of the Lakers’ 82 games. It was his second-highest game tally since playing a full 82-game season for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2018-19 season.

But his injuries were high profile. Foot and ankle soreness kept James out of the All-Star Game after he’d played in 20 straight. He suffered a sprained MCL in a Game 5 playoff loss to the Timberwolves that would have sidelined him for multiple weeks had the Lakers not been eliminated with the loss.

The Lakers are hoping James can stay relatively healthy for a run at a title playing alongside Luka Dončić in what could be his last NBA season. Limiting wear and tear during training camp would likely be the call whether or not James was dealing with an injury.

LeBron James (glute) sidelined to open Lakers’ training camp

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — LeBron James was sidelined to open training camp Tuesday with what Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick called “a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute.”

James, who turns 41 in December, will become the first player in league history to have played 23 seasons when the Lakers host the Golden State Warriors on opening night next month.

Redick said “the goal” was for James to be recovered in time for the Warriors game, but the coach did not rule out James participating in at least one of the Lakers’ six preseason games.

“It’s probably a little bit longer of a ramp-up leading into opening night for him,” Redick said of James. “Obviously in Year 23, it’s uncharted territory here.”

Redick said that James “probably did too much” in training camp last fall to show “buy-in” and ready himself and the team during Redick’s maiden voyage as a head coach.

“It’ll be a slower process with him leading into the first game,” Redick said. “He’s obviously got 22 years so far of wear and tear on the body and he’s dealing with a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute.

“So, we’re just playing the long game with LeBron.”

James told ESPN on Monday that “it remains to be seen” how much he planned to participate in training camp this year.

“I’m still ramping things back up,” James told ESPN. “I’m not where I want to be. But I mean, I don’t want to be where I want to be right now in September. So, I got some time and I’m looking forward to the process of getting there.”

James’ camp met with the Lakers’ brass leading up to training camp with a directive for the team to be “overly cautious” with the four-time champion in the early going to preserve him for a hopefully long playoff run, sources told ESPN.

James, who averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds for L.A. last season, came into that campaign declaring his intention to play in all 82 games. He played L.A.’s first 23 games before struggling in early December, leading to an eight-day absence when he sat out two games to address soreness in his left foot. This after James played in three out of the Lakers’ six preseason games last October.

L.A. opens up its six-game preseason slate against the Phoenix Suns in Palm Desert, California, on Friday.

James will not play against the Suns, sources told ESPN. But Redick said “it would be nice” to have James suit up for at least one preseason game.

“We would love to have that happen,” Redick added.

While James watched practice in street clothes Tuesday, Lakers guard Austin Reaves said he still made his presence felt.

“You know, it’s Bron, he’s always going to observe kind of communicate [what he sees],” Reaves said. “I think that’s the approach that he’s going to take right now, [which] is just being one of our vocal leaders. That’s what he’s done his whole career.”

Redick said that the Lakers also did not have Gabe Vincent (left knee management), Marcus Smart (left Achilles tendinopathy) and rookie Adou Thiero (left knee swelling) available for full participation in their opening practice. Redick added that Vincent should be available for the preseason opener against the Suns.

As for the Lakers who did fully participate to begin training camp?

“Uh, Luka [Doncic] was pretty good,” Redick said with a smile.

49ers’ Saleh admits he should’ve used better words with Jaguars’ Coen

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Two days after getting into a heated postgame exchange with Jacksonville Jaguars coach Liam Coen, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh reiterated that his comments last week about “legal signal stealing” were meant as a compliment but acknowledged he could have chosen his words better.

“It is all good,” Saleh said Tuesday. “Whatever happened on Sunday doesn’t change how I feel. In my heart, I genuinely was trying to give a compliment, and I own the fact that I probably used the wrong choice of words, but however you want to word it. I mean, they’re really, really good at putting their players in position to be successful. As coaches, we’re always chasing leverage. They’re trying to have winning leverage. We’re trying to take leverage away and everyone in the league is trying to find every avenue they can.

“As a coach watching their tape, I recognize the amount of hours that must be spent to be able to build formations and define every little indicator they can to give their players a chance to be in a successful position. That’s exhausting and every team does it. Some do it better than others and it was my way of acknowledging that these guys are really, really, really good at it.”

Saleh went on to compliment the job Coen is doing as coach of the 3-1 Jaguars, who handed the 49ers their first loss of the season Sunday.

“I think Liam’s doing a hell of a job,” Saleh said. “I really do. You can tell that that team’s really taking on his personality and I hope they came out of the game healthy, and I wish him the best of luck throughout the rest of the season. I wish I could have found a better choice of words, but my intent was always to compliment that football staff.”

After Jacksonville’s 26-21 win Sunday at Levi’s Stadium, television cameras caught Saleh and Coen yelling at each other and having to be separated, presumably from Saleh’s comments the previous week about how good the Jaguars were at legally stealing signals from opponents.

Saleh and Coen, the top two candidates for the Jaguars’ head coaching job in the offseason, did not initially greet each other at midfield after the game. On Tuesday, Saleh said he was seeking out Coen on the field to explain himself and compliment him for how he has the Jaguars playing when the argument escalated.

“The intent was to say exactly what I just said that I think he’s doing a really nice job, which I do,” Saleh said. “That football team is playing and taking on his personality. They’re playing violently on the offensive line and their running backs are running really hard and I think they’re doing a really, really nice job. I just wanted to let him know that I appreciate the way he’s going about his business with his football team.”

After Coen walked past Saleh without acknowledging him, he circled back toward Saleh while Jaguars center Robert Hainsey restrained him. Saleh responded and exchanged words with Jacksonville offensive tackle Walker Little as a Niners staff member held him back.

In a video captured by Action Sports Jax, Coen was heard shouting, “Keep my name out of your mouth. Keep my name out of your f—ing mouth,” to which Saleh replied, in part, “I will f— your world up.”

After the game, Coen twice declined to elaborate on the exchange, saying only that it was “not a big deal” and that they’d “keep that between us.”

Per custom, Saleh was not available postgame but spoke about it Tuesday as the Niners prepare for Thursday night’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Saleh said Tuesday he and Coen have not reached out to each other since Sunday and said again he wished he had chosen words other than “signal stealing” to make his point about the job Coen, Rams coach Sean McVay and others do in poring over game tape to find advantages for their teams without breaking the rules.

“Obviously, I did a poor job with the words,” Saleh said. “I mean, if I said the words film study, I don’t think we’re really talking about this. But I used signal stealing and that’s why I was so adamant about legally. I was just struggling for the words, but for Sean, same thing. These guys are the best in the world and that’s why they’re there.”

Niners coach Kyle Shanahan, who attempted to douse any potential tension Friday by pointing out that Saleh was trying to pay Coen a compliment and saying he shouldn’t have used the word “stealing,” said Tuesday he mostly thinks Sunday’s kerfuffle was much ado about nothing.

Asked Tuesday which NFL coaches could take Saleh in a fight, Shanahan laughed and said “Just me” before agreeing he would take the Detroit Lions’ Dan Campbell “over a lot of people.”

“Saleh’s too nice usually but seemed like someone struck a chord the other day,” Shanahan said. “I don’t think there’s any fights going on. It was kind of comical now to look back at it.”

Extended family of Grand Blanc Township church attacker releases statement

GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The extended family of the man who killed four people and injured several others at a Grand Blanc Township church released a statement on Tuesday.

The attacker drove his pickup truck into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township before getting out and firing shots with an assault rifle, police said. He also set the building on fire before he left and was killed by authorities, police said.

The attacker’s father said in a statement to NBC News on Monday that his family is devastated and doesn’t know what to think.

“We are completely in shock over this,” the statement says. “We have no answers. We are asking for privacy as we grieve our loss and those of the others.”

On Tuesday, Local 4 received a statement from the attacker’s extended family. Here is that statement:

Our hearts are broken for the victims, the survivors, and their families. The whole Grand Blanc community is hurting.

As Jake’s extended family, we are devastated by what he did. None of us can make sense of why he would do something so horrifying. We don’t have answers, and we are waiting on investigators to finish their work. Even then, we know nothing will make this right.

Our concern is with the families who lost loved ones, those who were injured, and everyone who now has to carry this weight. We pray for their healing and for peace in the middle of so much pain.

We also want to thank the first responders. Their courage and quick action saved many precious lives. For now, our family asks for privacy as we grieve and try to process this tragedy along with the community.

Extended family of Grand Blanc Township church attacker

Here’s what we know about the attack.

What happened

Police said the attack happened at 10:25 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 4200 block of McCandlish Road in Grand Blanc Township.

Grand Blanc Township police Chief William Renye said a man, who has since been identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, drove his vehicle through the front doors of the church.

Sanford then got out of the vehicle and started firing shots with an assault rifle, according to Renye.

Authorities commended the heroics of those inside the church, many of whom were shielding the children at the time of the attack.

“They were shielding the children who were also present within the church, moving them to safety,” Renye said. “Just hundreds of people just practicing their faith. Just extreme courage. Brave. And that’s the type of community that we are.”

The FBI described the attack as “targeted violence” and has since taken over the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-CALL-FBI. You can report a tip online here.

Deaths, injuries

Police have identified four people who were killed in the attack. They said two of them were killed by gunshots and two were found dead in the aftermath of the fire.

At least 10 people are injured, and police said Sunday afternoon that at least one of those people was in critical condition.

There are also several people currently unaccounted for.

What we know about suspect

Police said the suspect is Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-year-old man from Burton.

After the shooting, Sanford was confronted in the parking lot by an officer from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and a Grand Blanc Township police officer who had responded to the scene, police said.

Those two officers exchanged gunfire with Sanford, and he was killed, Renye said.

Police said the shooter was engaged within a minute of the first 911 call.

Church fire

When police arrived at the church, they found it fully engulfed in flames. They said they believe Sanford deliberately set the fire using an accelerant, possibly gasoline.

The fire was extinguished by Grand Blanc Township firefighters between noon and 1 p.m. It is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

As of Monday morning, authorities still have not had an opportunity to full go through the rubble.

Shooter’s friends speak to Local 4

Two close friends of the Grand Blanc Township church attack suspect said they had a bizarre and disturbing encounter with him just days before.

“How do you mourn the death of someone who did something so terrible?” Kara Pattison said. “If you asked me out of everybody I know to pick 10 people you think might do something like this, I wouldn’t not pick him. And I hate saying that.”

Pattison said she knew Sanford as a “fun-loving family guy,” but also someone who “harbored unkind feelings toward certain groups.”

“He definitely talked about groups of people in ways that weren’t acceptable,” Pattison said.

Pattison said she and her 16-year-old daughter, Lydia, had a scary and bizarre encounter with Sanford just 48 hours before the church attack. They said Sanford was in his truck at the time.

“We started to cross, and the truck like gunned its engine and came at us,” Pattison said. “I blocked my daughter and we jumped back, and then the window rolled down, and it was Jake. He was laughing. He’s, like, ‘Oh, got you guys.’”

Pattison said that was not necessarily normal behavior from Sanford.

“He had never pretended to run us over before, so no, that wasn’t normal behavior,” Pattison said.

Lydia used to babysit for Sanford’s son.

“I was devastated,” Lydia said. “I didn’t think someone that I knew and loved would do this to people. It’s devastating. It’s so bad.”

She said she can’t get the victims or Sanford’s family out of her head.

“I love (Sanford’s son) so much and I feel so bad for the wife and son because I can’t imagine what they’re going through right now,” Lydia said.

What’s next?

Police said they are still early in the investigation, and they are working to try to figure out Sanford’s motive.

They searched his home in Burton. They also said they will go through his cellphone records.

The FBI sent 100 agents to the scene to help authorities interview the many witnesses who were at the church.

Local 4’s Nick Monacelli confirmed that three IEDs were found inside Sanford’s vehicle during the police investigation.

Police: No further danger to public

Renye said police believe that Sanford acted alone, and they have no other suspects.

They said there is no further danger to the public.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this incident, which was completely unnecessary and avoidable,” Renye said.

Search at shooter’s home

Following the attack, the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad and SWAT teams conducted a thorough search of the suspect’s home. Bomb squad robots were used to safely inspect the property.

Multiple improvised explosive devices were found in the suspect’s vehicle, prompting authorities to treat the scene as potentially containing more explosives.

Just before 9 p.m. Sunday, Michigan State Police cleared the home, and more than a dozen FBI vehicles arrived. FBI agents are expected to conduct a detailed search as part of their ongoing investigation.

How to contact loved ones

If you’re wondering how to meet up with your family member who was at the church, call 248-705-7352.

That will lead you to the Red Cross, which is on scene with several people who were at the church when the shooting happened. They will be able to tell you where your family member is at.

Resources for the community

Community resources will be available throughout the week to support victims, families and the community after the deadly shooting.

On Monday and Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., resources will be available at the Henry Ford Genesys Health Club. From Wednesday through Friday, support will be available at the Grand Blanc Senior Center near Holly Road and Pagels Drive.

Police response

Police arrived at the attack scene roughly 30 seconds after receiving the 911 call.

During a press conference Sunday, Renye said they received a 911 call at 10:25 a.m. about the shooting.

Renye said police arrived at the scene before 10:26 a.m., just seconds after the first 911 call.

Woman who was inside church shares her story

Paula Maser, a primary teacher, recounted the horrifying moments after Sanford ran his truck into the church and opened fire.

“We had already sung our Sacrament part, and we heard a big bang, and it blew the doors in the church,” Maser said. “Everything after that was chaos.”

In an interview with NBC, Maser said Sanford shot at her and other church members as they tried to escape.

“I got in the car with friends, I got my friend in the car, and we were getting ready to leave, and the shooter shot at the car, three bullets hit the car,” she said.

At the nearby Trillium theater, there were emotional moments as family members were reunited.

For church member Stephanie Giddings, who missed church to go to work on Sunday, learning what happened was gut-wrenching.

“We went out to go look at the church and pray on the grounds, but the street was blocked off. My daughter was just baptized there, so it’s hard,” said Giddings.

Attacker’s father makes statement

Thomas Sanford, the father of the attacker, said his family is devastated and doesn’t know what to think following the church attack.

“We are completely in shock over this,” the statement says. “We have no answers. We are asking for privacy as we grieve our loss and those of the others.”

He told NBC News that he knew his son as a loving father and husband. The family sent their prayers to the Grand Blanc Township community and everyone who was affected.

Community rallies around victims

The attack sent shockwaves through the community and people came together Sunday night to support the church members who were attending the service when the shooting happened.

Community members brought food and drinks, offered rides, and tried to comfort families in any way they could.

“I had toys in my car, and there were kids sitting out here waiting, and so I went and got toys, and then I just have been sitting and waiting and trying to see if there is anything I can do to help,” said McKenzie Hedric.

Local churches came together with people of all faiths, praying for healing.

“Tonight, there’s no titles, we’re all just here to pray and ask God to help us,” said Anne Delisle.

What Gov. Whitmer said

Here’s what Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in response to the shooting:

My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community. Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable. I am grateful to the first responders who took action quickly. We will continue to monitor this situation and hold the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc close.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

Genesee County sheriff’s statement

Here’s what Gensee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said in response to the shooting:

This is a heartbreaking and tragic day for our community. We are working closely with Grand Blanc Township Police and other local, state, and federal partners to bring answers and provide support for the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this senseless act of violence.

Gensee County Sheriff Chris Swanson

Grand Blanc Township trustee speaks

Joel Feick, a resident of Grand Blanc Township and a member of its Board of Trustees, spoke to Local 4 just after the shooting.

“I was not home when it happened, but this happened right next to my condo,” Feick said. “My neighbors heard the gunfire. They heard the screaming, the windows. They saw the truck. It’s horrific.

Feick said he doesn’t yet have any additional details about what happened.

“I know that you can see the smoke from I-75 a couple of miles away, from this church just burning,” Feick said. “So, clearly, somebody set this church on fire. We’ve never seen anything like this.”

Feick said he’s never heard of anything like this happening in Grand Blanc since he’s been a resident.

“It’s very peaceful,” Feick said. “It’s very sad, and it’s horrific. On a Sunday, and people are at church? It’s awful.”

Sen. John Cherry statement

Here’s what Michigan Sen. John Cherry (D-Flint) said in response to the shooting:

I am deeply saddened by the news today of the tragic act of violence that happened here in Genesee County. My family and I extend our hearts to those injured and killed, their families, and their church family, and all who endured this traumatic experience today. To terrorize people in a place of worship, where their hopes are highest and their faith strongest, is particularly sickening and has rocked our entire community.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to all of the first responders from multiple agencies and communities who rushed to the scene and continue to help those affected.

The congregation, the people of Grand Blanc, and our Genesee County community as a whole will need to heal and rebuild emotionally and physically, and I hope we can all come together to support them and one another during these trying and terrifying times.

Michigan Sen. John Cherry

Oakland County prosecutor statement

Here’s what Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in response to the shooting:

Americans have a right to feel safe at church. My heart goes out to the victims of the tragic shooting at Grand Blanc’s LDS church. But sympathy is not enough. Gun violence is a public health crisis. We have an obligation to find solutions to this deadly problem, so that everyone can be safe at church, school, and other public places.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald

Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet statement

Here’s what Michigan Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet (MI-08) said in response to the shooting:

I am beyond devastated by the shooting this morning at Grand Blanc’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph and I are praying for the victims and the entire Grand Blanc community. This kind of violence in a place of worship is despicable.

Thank you to the first responders for your brave work to ensure our community’s safety. I urge all residents to avoid the area and give them space to respond to the situation.

Our team and I will continue to monitor the situation and be with our neighbors in Grand Blanc as we navigate this tragedy together.

Delaware County community attends fundraiser to help 8-year-old boy with Leukemia

A fundraiser for 8-year-old Lincoln Hanson, who is battling Leukemia, was held at Richman’s Ice Cream Company in Prospect Park Tuesday.

20 percent of sales during a three-hour period will go to the family.

What we know:

Doctors diagnosed Lincoln Hanson with cancer when he was three years old. He went into remission, but the cancer is back. Fundraisers are being held to help the family with medical expenses.

A GoFundMe says Lincoln has had 10 days of treatment and is preparing to start a second round. He will be hospitalized for a period of time.

What they’re saying:

“Overwhelming. He is so loved. Him and his family. We are just hoping the best for him,” said Desiree Hager. She got emotional talking about Lincoln, who is her nephew.

“It’s been a lot of emotions. Rollercoaster,” she said.

“They’re trying to do anything they can at this point to find something that will cure him or at least let him live for a little bit longer,” said his aunt.

“He’s amazing. You would never know. He runs around, laughing and having the time of his life,” said Hager about how Lincoln is doing. I talked to family members this evening at Richman’s Ice Cream Company in Prospect Park.

It is where the community came out for a fundraiser for the handsome little boy and his parents.

“He likes to play basketball, and he likes Roblox a lot too,” said his cousin Jack Hager.

Twenty percent of ice cream sales during the three designated hours will go to the family for customers who showed up and said his name.

“It’s all about community and it’s about family and being there for each other,” she said. Her 8-year-old daughter Teagan is friends with Lincoln and was a classmate.

“He’s smart and kind. He is really nice,” she said.

Lincoln’s friends all miss him at school. Many played various sports with him and Legos, which they all say he loves.

“I miss Lincoln man. It is just different without him at school,” said his classmate, Shane McHugh. Shane’s mom talked about supporting the family.

“We grew really close with Lincoln and his mom and his little brother and his dad, so we just wanted to come and support them,” said Melanie McHugh.

Zayn Francis was in first grade class with Lincoln and played soccer with him.

He has a message for his friend.

“Everybody came for you and everybody loves you,” said Francis.

Robert Saleh owns up to confrontation with Jaguars coach Liam Coen after game

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh owned up to his part in a post-game confrontation with Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen on Sunday.

After the Jaguars defeated the 49ers on the road, 26-21, Saleh and Coen went viral as they needed to be held back after screaming at one another on the field. Coen was seen saying, “Keep my name out of your mouth.”

The altercation stemmed from Saleh using the phrase “legal sign stealing” during a news conference before their game. But he downplayed what happened in his first time speaking with reporters.

“It is all good,” he said, via ESPN. “Whatever happened on Sunday doesn’t change how I feel. In my heart, I genuinely was trying to give a compliment and I own the fact that I probably used the wrong choice of words, but however you want to word it, I mean, they’re really, really good at putting their players in position to be successful.”

Coen also downplayed the situation after the game, saying that it wasn’t “a big deal” and “we’ll keep that between us.”

Saleh continued to give praise to Coen, saying that he does a “hell of a job.”

“As coaches, we’re always chasing leverage,” he explained. “They’re trying to have winning leverage. We’re trying to take leverage away and everyone in the league is trying to find every avenue they can. As a coach watching their tape, I recognize the amount of hours that must be spent to be able to build formations and define every little indicator they can to give their players a chance to be in a successful position. That’s exhausting and every team does it. Some do it better than others and it was my way of acknowledging that these guys are really, really, really good at it. And like I said, Sunday doesn’t change that.”

Sign-stealing in the NFL is legal, as long as boundaries are not crossed. Teams are allowed to use TV tape and all-22 film to figure out signals on any side of the ball. Before games, while also having their own staff in the press box to try to break down signals in real-time.

Here’s what Saleh said on Thursday at the game at length.

“Liam and his staff, a couple of guys coming from Minnesota, they’ve got – legally – a really advanced signal-stealing-type system where they always find a way to put themselves in an advantageous situation,” he said. “They do a great job with it. They formation you, they just try to find any nugget they can, so we’ve got to be great with our signals and we’ve got to be great with our communication to combat some of the tells that we might give on the field. They’re almost elite in that regard, that whole entire tree of Sean [McVay] to Kevin O’Connell to all those guys. They all do it.”
