LeBron James sidelined for start of Lakers training camp with ‘nerve irritation in the glute’

LeBron James won’t be available for the start of Lakers training camp.

Head coach JJ Redick announced Tuesday that James is dealing with “nerve irritation in the glute” and will have a slow ramp-up to the regular season.

“Nerve irritation in the glute” doesn’t come with a boilerplate prognosis. From Redick’s explanation, it doesn’t sound like a significant concern. But for a 40-year-old, 23rd-year NBA veteran with more mileage on his body than most anyone in the history of professional sports, any ailment comes with concern.

Hence, the slower ramp-up for James in training camp.

“It’s probably a little bit longer of a ramp-up leading up to opening night for him,” Redick told reporters at practice on Tuesday. “In year 23, uncharted territory here.”

Redick then acknowledged that the Lakers might not have optimally managed James’ reps last preseason.

“I felt in talking with performance and talking with [trainer Mike Mancias] and LeBron, he probably did too much last year in camp. Which was great for me as a first-year head coach to get buy-in from him.

“But it will be a slower process with him leading into the first game. He’s obviously got 22 years so far of wear and tear on his body. He’s dealing with a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute. We’re playing the long game with LeBron.”

James had a relatively healthy regular season in 2024-25 while playing in 70 of the Lakers’ 82 games. It was his second-highest game tally since playing a full 82-game season for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2018-19 season.

But his injuries were high profile. Foot and ankle soreness kept James out of the All-Star Game after he’d played in 20 straight. He suffered a sprained MCL in a Game 5 playoff loss to the Timberwolves that would have sidelined him for multiple weeks had the Lakers not been eliminated with the loss.

The Lakers are hoping James can stay relatively healthy for a run at a title playing alongside Luka Dončić in what could be his last NBA season. Limiting wear and tear during training camp would likely be the call whether or not James was dealing with an injury.

LeBron James (glute) sidelined to open Lakers’ training camp

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — LeBron James was sidelined to open training camp Tuesday with what Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick called “a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute.”

James, who turns 41 in December, will become the first player in league history to have played 23 seasons when the Lakers host the Golden State Warriors on opening night next month.

Redick said “the goal” was for James to be recovered in time for the Warriors game, but the coach did not rule out James participating in at least one of the Lakers’ six preseason games.

“It’s probably a little bit longer of a ramp-up leading into opening night for him,” Redick said of James. “Obviously in Year 23, it’s uncharted territory here.”

Redick said that James “probably did too much” in training camp last fall to show “buy-in” and ready himself and the team during Redick’s maiden voyage as a head coach.

“It’ll be a slower process with him leading into the first game,” Redick said. “He’s obviously got 22 years so far of wear and tear on the body and he’s dealing with a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute.

“So, we’re just playing the long game with LeBron.”

James told ESPN on Monday that “it remains to be seen” how much he planned to participate in training camp this year.

“I’m still ramping things back up,” James told ESPN. “I’m not where I want to be. But I mean, I don’t want to be where I want to be right now in September. So, I got some time and I’m looking forward to the process of getting there.”

James’ camp met with the Lakers’ brass leading up to training camp with a directive for the team to be “overly cautious” with the four-time champion in the early going to preserve him for a hopefully long playoff run, sources told ESPN.

James, who averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds for L.A. last season, came into that campaign declaring his intention to play in all 82 games. He played L.A.’s first 23 games before struggling in early December, leading to an eight-day absence when he sat out two games to address soreness in his left foot. This after James played in three out of the Lakers’ six preseason games last October.

L.A. opens up its six-game preseason slate against the Phoenix Suns in Palm Desert, California, on Friday.

James will not play against the Suns, sources told ESPN. But Redick said “it would be nice” to have James suit up for at least one preseason game.

“We would love to have that happen,” Redick added.

While James watched practice in street clothes Tuesday, Lakers guard Austin Reaves said he still made his presence felt.

“You know, it’s Bron, he’s always going to observe kind of communicate [what he sees],” Reaves said. “I think that’s the approach that he’s going to take right now, [which] is just being one of our vocal leaders. That’s what he’s done his whole career.”

Redick said that the Lakers also did not have Gabe Vincent (left knee management), Marcus Smart (left Achilles tendinopathy) and rookie Adou Thiero (left knee swelling) available for full participation in their opening practice. Redick added that Vincent should be available for the preseason opener against the Suns.

As for the Lakers who did fully participate to begin training camp?

“Uh, Luka [Doncic] was pretty good,” Redick said with a smile.

LeBron James sits out Lakers’ first practice as part of unprecedented load management plan

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — LeBron James didn’t participate in the Lakers’ first practice of the season, JJ Redick said, as the team and the 23-year-old veteran attempt to best manage a situation there’s no precedent for.

James, who will turn 41 in December, is the league’s all-time leader in minutes played, and this season, should pass Robert Parrish for most games played in league history.

“I think it’s probably a little big longer of a ramp up leading into opening night for him,” Redick said. “Just obviously in Year 23, it’s uncharted territory here. So, I felt, and in talking with performance and in talking with (James’ trainer) Mike (Mancias) and LeBron, like probably did too much last year in camp, which was great for me as a first-year head coach to get buy-in from him. But it’ll be a slower process with him leading into the first game. He’s obviously got 22 years so far of wear and tear on the body and he’s dealing with a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute.

“So, we’re just playing the long game with LeBron.”

Marcus Smart (Achilles tendinopathy) and Gabe Vincent (knee management) were also limited on the team’s first day, with Redick saying Vincent should be full-go by the end of this week and Smart ready by the next.

James said Monday that the physical challenges of playing 23 years in the NBA are what drives him to continue competing.

“The things that still push me is the fact that the love of the game is still high. The love of the process is even higher. So that’s what continues to push me to play this game. I mean, it’s really that simple,” he said. “Me training and working on my body and trying to get my body as close to 100 percent as possible every year, it’s something that’s like — it’s a beautiful thing for me. Just continue to challenge to see how well I can push myself to play the game at a high level, recover at a high level, be able to sleep better, mentally prepare, try to stay sharp throughout the course of a long season.”

To get James to the point of staying sharp for as long as possible as late into the season as possible, the Lakers decided to step off the gas here early.

“I don’t think there’s a proven way to handle someone who has this much mileage, this many minutes, been asked to do so many things on both ends of the court,” Redick said. “We asked a lot of him last year, we asked a lot of him to start the year in camp, so it’s just working as a partnership and trying to figure it out.”

James is on board with the plan, Redick said. The hope is that James will play at some point this preseason, but having James ready for opening night on Oct. 21 is the main goal.

James Gunn Hilariously Recalls Inventing The MCU’s Infinity Stone Lore In ‘3 Minutes’

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for being a well-oiled machine, thanks to its constant supply of new content in theaters and streaming with a Disney+ subscription. But fans who spent years watching the Marvel movies in order will recall that there was a ton of experimentation in its early days. James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy was a huge risk, and the filmmaker recently recalled coming up with the MCU’s Infinity Stone lore in “three minutes”. Let’s break it down.

Before James Gunn became the DCU’s co-CEO, he was attempting to bring the Guardians to life in live-action. The OG 2014 blockbuster offered much more information about the Infinity Stones, although it turns out that the exposition dump by Benicio del Toro’s The Collector came together without all that much thought. During a conversation with GQ about his movies, Gunn revealed:

When I wrote the scene with The Collector explaining that there was this explosion, and the Infinity Stones were born, and what they mean and where they came from, that was literally me just sitting down for 3 minutes and writing that. And that’s then what became the rest of the Infinity Stones. There was never anybody that said anything other than, ‘I think the red thing and the blue thing are going to end up being Infinity Stones’. That wasn’t in the plan to begin with.

How wild is that? While this was a sequence that would inform countless upcoming Marvel movies and TV shows, James Gunn actually wrote the Infinity Stones sequence in Guardians 1 on the fly. And those three minutes would end up being canon for the entirety of the shared universe. Talk about timing.

Gunn’s comments to GQ help to peel back the curtain on how things came together during the early stages of the MCU. While it looks to fans like the Kevin Feige and company have a master plan, ultimately its just regular people putting together each new blockbuster. James Gunn’s work on Guardians of the Galaxy opened up cosmic doors for the MCU, and provided backstory to the Infinity Stones, which would majorly factor into other projects including Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

In that same interview he also revealed that they shot the first Guardians movie with the Power Stone being red, but it had to be changed to purple for the theatrical cut. Namely because they decided the Reality Stone aka the Aether from Thor: The Dark World would be red instead.

After the ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, fans are left wondering if/when the franchise might return to the big screen. The movie’s title card claimed Star-Lord would be back, but it’s unclear whether or not we’ll see the rest of the team. None of the Guardians were listed in the Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement.

The next installment in the MCU is The Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25th as part of the 2025 movie release list. James Gunn’s latest directorial project Superman is in theaters now, which once again creates a canon for a shared universe.

James Franco Celebrates Dave Franco’s 40th Birthday in Public Appearance

James Franco stepped out for a rare public appearance to celebrate his brother Dave Franco’s 40th birthday.

James, 47, was photographed with his brother at the 71st Taormina Film Festival in Taormina, Italy, on Wednesday, June 11. Dave stood in front of a birthday cake as his wife, Alison Brie, mom Betsy Franco, James, producer Tiziana Rocca and James’ girlfriend, Izabel Pakzad, stood beside him.

The appearance came nearly one year after James gave one of his first interviews in years, during which he publicly discussed the end of his friendship with former collaborator Seth Rogen.

“I haven’t talked to Seth. I love Seth, we had 20 great years together, but I guess it’s over. And not for lack of trying. I’ve told him how much he’s meant to me,” he told Variety in October 2024.

Seth, 43, reacted to the comments in a February 11 interview with Esquire, saying, “Honestly, I absorb so little media that it really wasn’t on my radar.”

The outlet reported, “That is all he wants to say about that.”

James and Seth worked together on a number of films through the years, but in 2018, James was accused of sexual misconduct by five women. Four of the women were students of the actor at Studio 4.

One of the women named Sarah Tither-Kaplan claimed James “abused his power by exploiting the non-celebrity women that he worked with under the guise of giving them opportunities,” in an interview with Good Morning America in January 2018.

James denied the allegations. In 2019, two of the students sued the actor in Los Angeles County Superior Court for sexual misconduct, claiming James and his business partners led “widespread inappropriate and sexually charged behavior towards female students by sexualizing their power as a teacher and an employer by dangling the opportunity for roles in their projects.”

Three years later, James agreed to pay $2.2 million to settle the class-action lawsuit.

“While Defendants continue to deny the allegations in the complaint, they acknowledge that Plaintiffs have raised important issues; and all parties strongly believe that now is a critical time to focus on [addressing] the mistreatment of women in Hollywood,” a joint statement released after the settlement said.

James spoke out on SiriusXM’s “The Jess Cagle Podcast” in December 2021, months after settling the lawsuit. Though he initially denied the allegations against him, he did admit to sleeping with his students.

Though it only lasted for one season, Freaks and Geeks quickly became a cult favorite — and kicked off the careers of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The teen comedy was developed by Judd Apatow and Paul Feig, and premiered on NBC during the fall of 1999. Set in a 1980s Detroit suburb, the series […]

“Over the course of my teaching, I did sleep with students, and that was wrong,” he said. “But like I said, it’s not why I started the school and I wasn’t the person that selected the people to be in the class. So it wasn’t a ‘master plan’ on my part. But yes, there were certain instances where, you know what, I was in a consensual thing with a student and I shouldn’t have been.”

“At the time I was not clearheaded, as I’ve said. So I guess it just comes down to my criteria was like, ‘If this is consensual, like, I think it’s cool. We’re all adults so…’” James added.

Elsewhere in the interview, he went on to say that he has “been doing a lot of work” and “was in recovery before for substance abuse” due to issues “related to addiction.”

Charles Oakley Rips Patrick Ewing for Attending Knicks Games Amid James Dolan Lawsuit

Note: A previous version of this post incorrectly stated Oakley was engaged in a 2017 confrontation with Knicks owner James Dolan. The physical confrontation was with security, not Dolan.

As the New York Knicks have made their deepest run in the NBA playoffs since 1999-00, New York has been absolutely loving it. Celebrities have adorned courtside seats at MSG much like they always do, but the possibility of a trip to the NBA Finals has brought out former Knicks players in droves as well.

One person not in attendance is former Knicks All-Star Charles Oakley, who was arrested and ejected from MSG in 2017 after a confrontation with security at a game. Oakley was invited back to attend games last postseason, but denied the opportunity while he awaits an apology and lawsuit resolution from James Dolan and his company, The Madison Square Garden Company. The lawsuit has been dismissed and reinstated a few times.

His former teammate Patrick Ewing has been present at recent games, and Oakley is taking exception to that.

Talking to Jim Jackson on his show, here’s what he had to say about Ewing:

“The ones I played with who got some power, I thought would be Patrick [Ewing], but he didn’t step up. I hold him more responsible than anybody else. He’s supposed to be our franchise player. I played with him for 10 years. … You’ve got to speak up for me. He hasn’t spoke up yet so I’m gonna let it just play out. I would love to be there, I know the fans would love me to be there,” Oakley said.

“[Ewing] should have called me and talked to me like a man when this happened. Never done that. … He’s never been the guy who, when we was down and out… in playoff games and regular season games, you know never stepped up so maybe I shouldn’t expect him to step up so much now.”

He clarified he doesn’t fault the Knicks players in attendance that he didn’t play with, but clearly takes major exception to those from his era, Ewing in particular, who are at the games. He also said he felt hurt that he heard from competitors like Reggie Miller and Michael Jordan after the 2017 incident, but not from Ewing, who was his teammate.

“All the other guys I went to war with, they spoke up, but guys I played with [didn’t].”

For what it’s worth, Michael Rapaport said he stopped getting Knicks tickets from the team after he voiced support for Oakley.

Certainly unfortunate to see such icons from Knicks lore to have verbal hostility with one another. Even if the Knicks can force a Game 7 with a win Saturday night, don’t expect Oakley to be in attendance at Madison Square Garden.

49ers draft pick Jordan James receives Frank Gore stamp of approval – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

SANTA CLARA — With the No. 147 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the 49ers selected a running back who had Frank Gore’s blessing.

Per a social media post from CEO and Owner Jed York, Oregon’s Jordan James received Gore’s approval.

“That means a lot,” James said via video. “Just the caliber of player he was. That’s a Hall of Fame running back right there and just to get a compliment from him on my game, that means a lot. He is actually good friends with my old running back coach. So, he knows about me. He kept in touch with me, things like that.”

Ohio State University running backs coach Carlos Locklyn tipped off the 49ers alum about the prospect, who also had quite a bit of contact with 49ers running backs coach Bobby Turner.

“Just be yourself,” James recalled of Turner’s advice. “He said it a lot on Zoom, just be myself. There’s no right or wrong answers to any questions that he was asking me, just trying to see the type of person I was.”

The 49ers have a history of developing running backs into successful ball carriers, and James might already be a step ahead. The former Duck already has a history of being able to get into the end zone with 31 career rushing touchdowns while at Oregon, tying him for the fifth most in school history.

James believes he will be able to assimilate quickly into the San Francisco system while learning from Turner, as well as one of the best in the game in Christian McCaffrey.

“He’s one of the great running backs right now,” James said. “He’s one of the best in the league right now. It’s honestly going to be an honor to go in and learn from him, learn from a great running back like that.

“I think they have a great outside zone run scheme that I’m pretty good at. I did a lot at Oregon, so I think I’ll fit pretty well into their scheme and into their offense in general.”

James will get reps behind McCaffrey and Isaac Guerendo, who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

James Marsden Would Love To Do Another Season of ‘Paradise’

[Editor’s note: The following contains some spoilers for Paradise.]

Summary

  • In the Hulu series ‘Paradise,’ a murder triggers a high-stakes investigation in an affluent community.
  • Actor James Marsden discusses his role as President Cal Bradford and the dynamic with Agent Xavier Collins.
  • Marsden praises the writing and working with Sterling K. Brown, expressing interest in returning for future seasons.

Created by Dan Fogelman (This Is Us), the Hulu original series Paradise is set in an almost idyllic community. But when Agent Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) finds President Cal Bradford (James Marsden) dead on his bedroom floor, it triggers an investigation with the highest of stakes. Searching for answers and uncovering clues along the way is a threat to their carefully crafted existence, and when you threaten those in powerful positions things can quickly spiral, but Xavier is driven to find out what happened, even if it turns his own world upside down.

During this one-on-one interview with Collider, Marsden talked about how a conversation at the Emmy Awards led to his role in Paradise, why it’s daunting to have to be presidential, learning about a character through his past when you already know his fate, the dead body stand-in that filled in for him, the dynamic between Cal and Xavier, how working with Brown was a dream, and that he’d be willing to play a twin, just to be able to return for another season.

Is ‘Paradise’ Streaming? When Can You Watch Sterling K. Brown’s Political Drama

The ‘This Is Us’ alum is playing a secret agent next, and you won’t want to miss it.

Collider: I read that Dan Fogelman pulled you aside at last year’s Emmys and told you he had a role for you. How does that feel, as an actor, to have someone of his caliber write a role, think of you and approach you about it?

JAMES MARSDEN: I obviously knew who he was, and I’ve been an admirer of his work for a long time, so it was a nice feather in my cap. It was pretty cool. I listened because he’s one of these minds that you just wanna work with. You wanna be in their world. And so, I was very flattered when he sent me the script. He told me the basic premise that I’d be playing the president and, of course, I immediately got tensed up there. I was like, “Really? Me? The president?” But then, he explained to me how he was a bit different and unconventional, so I read the script and loved it. And he said, “Do you have any questions for me?” I said, “How close are we to this actually happening?” And he laughed and was like, “Well, maybe not so far off. I don’t know.”

I had always wanted to work with [Dan]. Sterling [K. Brown] is an incredible actor. I had worked with Julianne [Nicholson] years before on Ally McBeal, which was so different. It felt like what Westworld felt like when it was shaping up. There was chatter about it. There was talk of, “This is Dan’s next show. These are the people that are involved. This is a very exclusive thing to be a part of.” And then, when I read the scripts, it was reflected in the material, so I signed on immediately.

James Marsden Plays a President That Doesn’t Fit the Mold in ‘Paradise’

“It’s daunting when you have to be presidential.”

Does it feel daunting to play a president? Do you have to just focus on the man and not the job title, or do you have to always keep that in mind?

MARSDEN: It’s daunting when you have to be presidential, but the safety net with this role is that Dan has always said Cal doesn’t really want to be president. He was forced into it, and he’s not afraid to lean into having a good time while he’s doing it. I do think he’s qualified and he’s capable. He’s a good communicator, and at the end of the day, he’s a man with character who will try to do the right thing when it comes down to it. He believes in himself, and he lets the nerds figure out the real strategic stuff, and then he makes the final decision of, “Okay, what does a good human do, or try to do, in this situation? Sometimes maybe it’s impossible to do everything good.” So, that wasn’t as daunting. I knew that we were not necessarily going to highlight the president so much behind the desk, but what he was like at home with his son and with Xavier, after hours, chatting and shooting the shit, and seeing the regrets that he carries and the things that he grapples with on a day-to-day basis. Getting to see the human side of the character was appealing to me, and it wasn’t as daunting as if I had to just be the president.

I don’t want to get specifically political about anything because that doesn’t really pertain to the story, but when you play a president, does it make you look at real-life politics and the presidency any differently? When you’re trying to put your character in context and you’re thinking about how being in that position would shape him and make him who he is, does it give you a different perspective on the job?

MARSDEN: Sure, it certainly made me want the job less. I’m not sure that I’d want that position, but if I had to take that position, I would definitely lean in Cal’s direction. I would want to rewrite the rule book on that. It’s silly that we hold certain standards for that position. These people are sometimes not allowed to be human beings. They’re supposed to be robots who have never smoked a joint in their life or whatever. It’s experience in life and mistakes and recognizing that we are fallible human beings that shape and form and mature a man or a woman into being in a place where they have reached a maturation level where they are capable of holding that position. So, I would actually wanna rewrite it and have a little more fun with the position if I were there. But it definitely didn’t really make me ever want that job.

‘Paradise’ Review: Sterling K. Brown Stuns in ‘This Is Us’ Creator’s Sleek, Timely Political Thriller

Political conspiracies, lies, and the human heart collide in Brown and Dan Fogelman’s reunion effort.

When your character is dead in the first episode and that’s your starting point, what’s it like to figure out who he is through flashbacks? Does it feel different to find and understand a character when you know he can’t grow and evolve past a certain point in the future and you really only have his past to explore and understand him by?

MARSDEN: Great question. It makes everything feel way more concentrated because you know where the beginning is and where the end is. Everything can be more deliberate. You can find the places where he’s going to evolve and change. There’s a really beautiful arc that he goes through in the show. There are a lot of shifts inside of him as a human being trying to right his wrongs. You look at the timeline and you see where it all needs to take place, and it can be that much richer because of that. At some point, I think Cal is resigned to the idea that he might not make it. I don’t think he knows for sure that he isn’t going to. He’s not martyring himself. But there’s something that puts him on alarm and makes him go, “Because of what I’m doing here and because I’m releasing the truth, I am going to have a bounty on my head.” He wants to do everything possible that he can to write his wrongs before that potentially takes place.

James Marsden Had a Dead Body Prosthetic To Help Him Out While Shooting ‘Paradise’

“His name was Russell, and I was jealous of him. I’d show up on set and everyone would talk about how great it was when he was working.”

James Marsden as Cal Bradford standing in a t-shirt and robe in the Hulu series Paradise
Image via Hulu

Did you have to lie there for the scenes when your body is discovered? What is it like to shoot a death scene like that?

MARSDEN: They were very kind on this show. I don’t mind getting dirty. Bloody me up. I don’t care if I’m sticky and gross. It’s the holding your breath that’s the hard part, but they never made me go too long. They also shot around me with a really incredible reproduction of me. It was a fully, head-to-toe prosthetic James, lying there in a bathrobe. His name was Russell, and I was jealous of him. I’d show up on set and everyone would talk about how great it was when he was working, and I wasn’t. They used the mannequin version of me for a lot of it. It is a weird thing to be laying there, pretending to be dead, but I got used to that on Westworld. When I watch it, I know it’s all fake, but my kids probably don’t like it and they’re not going to enjoy this. It’s a strange thing. My mom was like, “Oh, do you die in it?” “Yeah.” “I’m not watching that.”

We really get to know your character better through his conversations and in his more intimate moments. Cal and Xavier have a lot of very personal conversations. What was it like to establish those relationships in a more personal way, whether it was with Sterling K. Brown, Julianne Nicholson, or even Krys Marshall?

MARSDEN: When he’s around a group of people, he has to be very presidential. It’s that one-on-one connection that he really desires. That’s why he’s with Krys’ character. That’s why he desperately wants to connect with Xavier and have a pal to shoot the shit with and have a drink. He wants to watch a movie with his son and try to forge those bonds a bit more. But you also see the loneliness in his life. You see him unhappy and in a place in his life where he has a lot of regrets and wishes he had taken a left instead of a right. I think that’s also the human experience when you look back and think of where you screwed up and what you could have done differently. But then, you make a choice in your life to learn from that and change, rather than wallow in it. You see Cal doing that throughout the course of the show.

What was it like to have Sterling K. Brown to play those moments with? He seems like the kind of actor where it’s hard not to see the emotion on his face or in his eyes. What’s that like to work off of?

MARSDEN: It’s a dream. It really is. I know you listen to a lot of actors talking about how great it is to work with each other, but I’ve gotta say, his level of what he does, he can sit there and not say a word and it’s the most gripping thing you could watch, or he could give you heartbreak without a tear or an expression. You just feel him. He’s one of those people that just feels. The writing was so perfect and did most of our work for us. I understood the assignment, and he understood the assignment. When we got there, we just clicked and we got it. I knew what it was about, and so did he. We were not thinking about the scripts, at that point. We were thinking about the connection and the dynamic between these two people. The worst feeling as an actor on set is feeling like you have to muscle your way through a scene and to really force something to work. And with Sterling, he just comes in and caresses the scene with his presence, and it just makes it all so much easier. You just wanna be at his level. I think that’s why all the scenes with he and I just work so well. I was very lucky to be working with that man.

‘Paradise’ is worth tuning into alone for these subtle references.

The moment when Cal asks Xavier if he can forgive him for what happened, what kind of response do you think he was actually expecting in that moment? Can he ever actually truly forgive what happened?

MARSDEN: Just to play devil’s advocate, there is room there. You could argue that Cal did his best. It was an impossible situation and there were changing variables that happened along the way that made it impossible for him to keep his word. Does that negate the fact that Xavier lost his wife and feels that there was a promise made to him, and he feels betrayed? He’s absolutely entitled to feel everything he’s feeling. But when he asks if there’s any way to forgive him, I think what he’s asking is, “Will you ever be able to see that there was no malice in what I did and no deceit?” I think he really doesn’t think there was any deceit. I think he tried to do his best in a situation where he felt overwhelmed and maybe under-qualified, but I do think he loves Xavier and would do anything for him. At that moment, you saw him being not a perfect human being, and maybe that’s what he’s asking forgiveness for. Can you forgive me for not being a perfect human being? I don’t know. That’s the best I can make of it.

James Marsden Would Love To Find a Way to Be in More Seasons of ‘Paradise’

What was your reaction the first time you read the finale script? How do you feel about the way everything wraps up and where it leaves things? Are you already asking for them to find a long lost twin of Cal’s?

MARSDEN: It was such a great group to work for. I had heard that Dan Fogelman does not populate his sets with anyone with egos, or anyone who’s unprofessional or unpleasant in any way. I was very happy to hear that because I try to do the same thing in my life. I wanna be around good feelings and good spirits and good people, so I was happy about that. So, the idea of doing this again is really appealing to me. The writing is off the charts. The acting company is brilliant. The crew and everybody is like a big family. I can see why This Is Us worked so well. He set that tone on set. It was a lot of the same crew from This Is Us, so you can tell how special of a man Dan is and what tone he sets on set. It was a really beautiful experience. You want every job to feel like this, so if it does continue, I’d go full Dead to Me and be a twin again. Maybe one of the 25,000 people who was allowed to stay can start cloning people. I’m gonna run this by Dan.

James Marsden shows interest in doing another season of Paradise

James Marsden has made it clear that he would love to return for another season of Paradise. While there are no confirmed plans for a new season, Marsden’s enthusiasm for the show and its bold storytelling leaves the door open for future possibilities.

“I would love to do it again. I don’t know how that would work, but I’m open to the suggestions,”

Marsden said in an interview with Collider. He praised the show’s willingness to take risks and challenge audiences, calling it a rare and courageous endeavor.

“It’s very rare to be a part of something that feels brave enough to take risks and try to tell a story that might make us ask a lot of questions about ourselves and our future,”

he added.

Marsden’s journey with Paradise began with a surprise conversation at the Emmy Awards. Dan Fogelman, the show’s creator, approached him to discuss a role. Initially, Marsden was shocked when Fogelman mentioned he would be playing the president.

“I immediately got tensed up there. I was like, ‘Really? Me? The president?’”

Marsden recalled.

However, after Fogelman explained that the character was unconventional, Marsden read the script and was immediately drawn to the unique approach.

“I obviously knew who he was, and I’ve been an admirer of his work for a long time, so it was a nice feather in my cap,”

Marsden said of Fogelman.

Marsden’s experience with Paradise

Marsden praised the atmosphere on set, describing the cast and crew as kind, talented, and at the top of their game. He particularly highlighted his on-screen dynamic with Sterling K. Brown, who plays Xavier. Their chemistry added depth to the show’s narrative, making their characters’ connection central to the story.

“Working with Sterling K. Brown was a dream come true,”

Marsden said.

One of the challenges Marsden faced was portraying a character whose ending was already known. Despite this, he managed to develop his character, Cal, by exploring his past. Marsden also shared a humorous moment from filming, recalling the use of a dead body stand-in.

Marsden found similarities between his experience in Paradise and his role in Netflix’s Dead to Me. In both shows, his characters were initially planned for one season but became integral to the storyline.

“I’m finding myself in the same situation as Dead to Me, which is, hey, I know I’m supposed to be around for one season, but how do we get to continue this party?”

Marsden said.

James Marsden’s journey with Paradise has been a blend of surprise opportunities and memorable moments. His passion for the show’s story and characters shines through, leaving fans eager to see if he’ll return for more.
