Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Gen V season 2, episode 4, “Bags”.
Powerful supes have become commonplace in Gen V, given that Godolkin University is filled with talented young heroes, but one important character is a lot stronger than season 2 is letting on. With characters like Marie being presented as the most promising supe Godolkin has ever seen, the spinoff is clearly putting a lot of emphasis on her skill set.
Not only has she begun to master bloodbending, but her links to Project Odessa in Gen V all but confirm that she is the closest match to Homelander in The Boys universe. However, she isn’t the only supe to be given a spotlight during the show’s return, as Jordan became the number one-ranked student while Emma’s abilities also improved.
Even Cipher’s power reveal in Gen V season 2, episode 4, further emphasized just how many frighteningly strong characters are lurking in the university setting, yet one of the spinoff’s most influential figures is being downplayed. Having shown her capabilities in season 1, Cate has been sidelined and weakened in the latest installment, but she’s still far more intimidating than she looks.
Gen V Season 2 Is Making Cate Look Surprisingly Weak
Following her head injury in season 2’s premiere, Cate’s powers have been messy to say the least, as her ability to control minds doesn’t work as intended. Previously, she was able to touch someone and command them to do whatever she wanted, hence how she was able to keep the Woods a secret and convince Luke that his brother was dead.
Now though, her powers appear to be malfunctioning following her near-death experience. Although she’s still got a long way to go, Cate’s redemption arc in Gen V season 2 has gotten underway, as she helped Jordan sneak into Cipher’s secret room. To do so, she attempted to control a guard’s mind so that they could be let inside without trouble.
Unfortunately, her broken abilities made the target start making love to a garden gnome instead, proving she is much weaker than before. Consequently, the fact that her skills are faulty and that she can rarely use them makes her one of the most fragile central characters on paper, especially since she doesn’t have superstrength or enhanced durability to protect her.
Cate’s Hospital Scene Proves Just How Powerful She Really Is
With Gen V presenting Cate as more vulnerable than ever, it’s easy to feel she is becoming helpless, but don’t be fooled, as the evidence suggests she is still extremely powerful. Considering she was valuable enough to be part of Homelander’s supe army in The Boys season 4, Cate is clearly one of the franchise’s strongest supes at her peak.
Interestingly though, her powers aren’t completely gone, and her hospital scene showed that they are even more terrifying than first meets the eye. While in a coma, Cate was able to control one of the nurses tending to her to communicate with Sam, eventually making her stab and kill her colleague, alongside at least one other member of the medical staff.

This single scene proved that even if she isn’t fully conscious, she can still force people to do the most violent things imaginable. As a result, Cate’s abilities seem to have almost no limitations, and once she is able to regain control of them, there will be very few characters stronger than her in Gen V, or the entire franchise.
