LeBron James sidelined for start of Lakers training camp with ‘nerve irritation in the glute’

LeBron James won’t be available for the start of Lakers training camp.

Head coach JJ Redick announced Tuesday that James is dealing with “nerve irritation in the glute” and will have a slow ramp-up to the regular season.

“Nerve irritation in the glute” doesn’t come with a boilerplate prognosis. From Redick’s explanation, it doesn’t sound like a significant concern. But for a 40-year-old, 23rd-year NBA veteran with more mileage on his body than most anyone in the history of professional sports, any ailment comes with concern.

Hence, the slower ramp-up for James in training camp.

“It’s probably a little bit longer of a ramp-up leading up to opening night for him,” Redick told reporters at practice on Tuesday. “In year 23, uncharted territory here.”

Redick then acknowledged that the Lakers might not have optimally managed James’ reps last preseason.

“I felt in talking with performance and talking with [trainer Mike Mancias] and LeBron, he probably did too much last year in camp. Which was great for me as a first-year head coach to get buy-in from him.

“But it will be a slower process with him leading into the first game. He’s obviously got 22 years so far of wear and tear on his body. He’s dealing with a little bit of nerve irritation in the glute. We’re playing the long game with LeBron.”

James had a relatively healthy regular season in 2024-25 while playing in 70 of the Lakers’ 82 games. It was his second-highest game tally since playing a full 82-game season for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2018-19 season.

But his injuries were high profile. Foot and ankle soreness kept James out of the All-Star Game after he’d played in 20 straight. He suffered a sprained MCL in a Game 5 playoff loss to the Timberwolves that would have sidelined him for multiple weeks had the Lakers not been eliminated with the loss.

The Lakers are hoping James can stay relatively healthy for a run at a title playing alongside Luka Dončić in what could be his last NBA season. Limiting wear and tear during training camp would likely be the call whether or not James was dealing with an injury.

Joe Ryan strong in start on Friday

They might have “royal” in their name, but it’s Joe Ryan who reigns supreme over the division foe.

The Twins starter entered the day 7-0 with a 1.30 ERA in his career against the Kansas City Royals and while Ryan said he doesn’t really think about his history against an opponent, good or bad, it was more of the same for Ryan on Friday night. Ryan threw five innings of one-run ball in his start, and he had plenty of run support behind him as the Twins beat Kansas City 9-4 on Friday night at Target Field.

“Sometimes you go out there, you attack some hitters. Lineups stay the same over a period of time,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “You gain some real good confidence in what you have to do and how to make pitches against a certain group and then you can not only pitch well, but ride that confidence, whether you know it or not.”

Ryan gave up a leadoff home run to Mike Yastrzemski in the first inning on Friday as part of a prolonged first but then settled in nicely to finish off his start. His teammates, meanwhile, scored three runs in the first inning and another two in the second as they jumped out to a big lead early in what would become their third straight win.

The impressive start to Luke Keaschall’s major league career continued when he had RBI knocks in each of the first two innings. The second baseman has now reached safely in each of the first 10 games as major leaguer and has driven in 10 runs in his first 10 games, the most by a player in Twins’ history.

“He’s a good, natural hitter and that’s what it looks like,” Baldelli said. “He looks good.”

Matt Wallner and Kody Clemens hit home runs for the Twins, who finished the day with 14 hits. Ryan Jeffers had a team-high three of those hits. Jeffers, Clemens, Keaschall and Royce Lewis each drove in two runs.

Woods Richardson feeling better

Simeon Woods Richardson was upbeat and cheerful on Friday, a noticeable difference from just days earlier. Woods Richardson was dealing with what manager Rocco Baldelli described as a “stomach issue,” while the team was in Cleveland last weekend.

Unbeknownst to them, that stomach issue was actually a parasite. The starting pitcher was placed on the injured list and traveled back to Minneapolis, rather than to Detroit with his teammates, where he got the diagnosis. The parasite, he believes, came from something he ate.

But after getting treated earlier in the week, Woods Richardson has resumed throwing and is feeling good once again. He dropped some weight but it wasn’t “that much thankfully,” he said, and he is counting down the days until he’s able to return.

“We’re all back to normal,” Woods Richardson said. “I’m actually glad. Just knowing the fact of what it was, cause I’ve heard some cases where people don’t come out on the other side of that.”

López progressing

Pablo López will hit another milestone in his progression on Saturday.

The starting pitcher, who suffered a Grade-2 strain of his teres major in early June, threw twice off the mound while the team was on its last road trip. Saturday, he’s going to get off the mound for one up. He’ll throw his pregame bullpen and then come in and simulate throwing the first inning, throwing around 15 to 20 pitches.

“We’re getting to a point where we look at how I feel after every milestone and then we move,” López said. “I throw (Saturday), then my game day is five days from now. If I’m bouncing back well, if I’m recovering well, we move on to the next step five days later.”

The next step would be live batting practice and then eventually a rehab assignment. Crossing the finish line healthy is the starter’s first priority, but beyond that, the goal is to fit in as many starts as he possibly can towards the end of the season.

“If it’s five, I want it to be five and if there’s a chance at a sixth, I want to do a sixth as long as I’m honest with myself and the training staff like ‘Hey, I hit this mark and I’m feeling good,’” López said.

Briefly

Byron Buxton (rib inflammation) is getting closer to return, but he is “not quite there yet,” Baldelli said. Baldelli said he has yet to reach the point where he is fully able to do all of his baseball activity pain-free. “There are still things he needs to build up and be able to do at his normal, explosive level.” … First-round draft pick Marek Houston threw out a ceremonial first pitch on Friday.

Twins promote RHP Zebby Matthews for start vs. Brewers

The Minnesota Twins recalled right-hander Zebby Matthews from Triple-A St. Paul and inserted him into the rotation for their road game Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The 24-year-old Matthews lasted only three innings in a 5-2 loss to the Brewers, giving up four runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked three as the Twins’ 13-game winning streak came to an end.

He closed out last season in the Twins’ rotation and fashioned a 1-4 record with a 6.69 ERA in nine starts. He has produced a 2-1 record with a 1.93 ERA in seven starts for St. Paul, which includes 38 strikeouts and nine walks over 32⅔ innings.

The Twins on Sunday also selected the contract of outfielder Carson McCusker, a 26-year-old who has yet to make his big league debut. The 6-foot-8, 250-pound slugger is hitting .350 with 10 homers and 36 RBIs in 38 games this season for St. Paul.

The Twins had recorded three straight shutouts entering Sunday’s game, with the pitching staff recording a collective 3.15 ERA that ranks No. 3 in the majors.

Matthews pitched a scoreless first to extend the Twins’ streak to 34 straight shutout innings — the longest streak in Twins history, which began in 1961. They had three longer shutout streaks when they were the Washington Senators, but the most recent of those took place in 1913.

To accommodate Matthews’ arrival, the Twins placed reliever Danny Coulombe (left forearm extensor strain) on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Thursday. Coulombe has yet to allow a run this season in 16⅔ innings.

“It’s obviously not good, but I’m not overly concerned,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “Danny hasn’t been available now since the last time he pitched. We’ve been working around him, trying to see if we could give him a little time and get him where he needs to be. He’s shown good improvement, but he’s not ready to pitch quite yet.

“He’s going to need a little bit more. I’m not going to put a timeline on it. I’m not going to say it’s the minimum, but I’m optimistic that it won’t be too long.”

Coulombe becomes the third Twins player to go on the injured list during this weekend series. Shortstop Carlos Correa and center fielder Byron Buxton both went on the seven-day concussion injured list after they collided while chasing a shallow fly ball Thursday in Baltimore.

To make room for McCusker, the Twins shifted rookie Luke Keaschall to the 60-day IL to open a spot on the 40-man roster. Keaschall fractured his right forearm April 25 against the Los Angeles Angels.

The Associated Press and Field Level Media contributed to this report.

Baylor Bears vs. Utah Utes: How to watch live stream, TV channel, NCAA Basketball start time

Halftime Report

Only one more half stands between Baylor and the win they were favored to collect coming into this afternoon. After one quarter their offense has really been able to impose its will, dominating Utah 37-17.

Baylor already has six blowout wins this season, but why stop there? Barring a freak comeback, they will be celebrating another huge victory in the locker room very soon.

Who’s Playing

Utah Utes @ Baylor Bears

Current Records: Utah 8-3, Baylor 8-3

How To Watch

What to Know

Baylor is preparing for their first Big 12 matchup of the season on Tuesday. They will play host again on Tuesday to welcome the Utah Utes, where tip off is scheduled at 2:00 p.m. ET at Foster Pavilion. The Bears have been getting the ball to fall more lately as they’ve increased their point totals each of their last three games.

Baylor is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They claimed a resounding 107-53 victory over Arlington Bapt. The Bears have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won six matchups by 25 points or more this season.

Baylor smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 23 offensive rebounds. That’s the most offensive rebounds they’ve posted since back in January.

Meanwhile, Utah pushed their score all the way to 88 last Saturday, but even that wasn’t enough to win. They took a 95-88 hit to the loss column at the hands of Iowa.

Despite the defeat, Utah had strong showings from Lawson Lovering, who went 11 for 14 en route to 25 points, and Mason Madsen, who went 6 for 11 from beyond the arc en route to 26 points plus six rebounds. What’s more, Lovering also posted a 78.6% field goal percentage, which is the highest he’s posted since back in February.

Baylor’s win was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 8-3. As for Utah, their loss dropped their record down to an identical 8-3.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as the two teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Baylor hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 86.9 points per game. However, it’s not like Utah struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 86.7. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

Looking ahead, Baylor is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 11.5 points. This contest will be their fourth straight at home (so far over this stretch they are 1-1 against the spread).

Odds

Baylor is a big 11.5-point favorite against Utah, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Bears as a 10.5-point favorite.

The over/under is 152.5 points.

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. UCF Knights: How to watch, schedule, live stream info, start time, TV channel

Who’s Playing

UCF Knights @ Texas Tech Red Raiders

Current Records: UCF 9-2, Texas Tech 9-2

How To Watch

What to Know

UCF is preparing for their first Big 12 matchup of the season on Tuesday. They and the Texas Tech Red Raiders will face off at 2:00 p.m. ET at United Supermarkets Arena. Both are strolling into their matches after big wins in their previous games.

Texas Tech is hoping to do what Jacksonville couldn’t last Saturday: put an end to UCF’s winning streak, which now stands at five games. UCF blew past Jacksonville 86-66. The matchup marked the Knights’ most dominant win of the season so far.

Among those leading the charge was Keyshawn Hall, who went 5 for 7 en route to 21 points plus two steals. Another player making a difference was Jordan Ivy-Curry, who earned 19 points plus three steals.

Even though they won, UCF struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only five offensive rebounds. That’s the fewest offensive rebounds they’ve posted since back in November of 2023.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Texas Tech). They simply couldn’t be stopped last Saturday as they easily beat Lamar 101-57. The Red Raiders have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won seven games by 21 points or more this season.

Texas Tech’s victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Christian Anderson, who went 8 for 10 en route to 20 points plus five rebounds and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Darrion Williams, who went 7 for 13 en route to 23 points plus seven rebounds and five assists.

UCF pushed their record up to 9-2 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home. As for Texas Tech, they are on a roll lately: they’ve won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 9-2 record this season.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as the two teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. UCF hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 80.8 points per game. However, it’s not like Texas Tech struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 86.3. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

Not only did both teams in this Tuesday’s match win their last matches, they also took care of their bettors and covered the spread. Looking ahead, Texas Tech is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 12.5 points. This contest will be their 12th straight as the favorites (so far over this stretch they are 6-5 against the spread).

Odds

Texas Tech is a big 12.5-point favorite against UCF, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Red Raiders as a 13.5-point favorite.

The over/under is 146.5 points.
